It all began in 2010 at a group camping event where the Freunds (Brad and Michelle, pictured right) met the Aldridges (Travis and Lori, pictured left). Bonding over a shared passion for barbecue and cooking, Brad and Travis quickly began crafting homemade rubs and sauces to enhance their meat smoking skills. Many weekends were spent cooking for friends during our camping trips.
In 2014, Lori started experiencing digestive issues that prevented her from enjoying the barbecue. After two years of searching for answers, she discovered the Low FODMAP diet, which significantly improved her health. However, this posed a challenge since onion and garlic, which are common in barbecue, were not allowed. Determined to find a solution, we set out to create recipes that everyone could enjoy.
Over the next few years, we experimented with our traditional rub and sauce recipes to make them Low FODMAP, while maintaining their delicious flavors. With the help of our camping friends as taste testers, we refined our recipes to be gluten, onion, and garlic free without sacrificing taste.
In 2015, we formed Smoke ‘n Sanity and entered the barbecue competition scene, bringing on board Dave and Amy Matchan, fellow camping friends who shared our love for smoking meat. Despite advice to use commercially produced rubs and sauces, we chose to compete with our own recipes. To our delight, we achieved numerous top ten awards in both KCBS and non-KCBS events.
By 2019, we decided to share our Low FODMAP spices and rubs with the world. Our mission is simple: to bring flavor back to those on a Low FODMAP diet, offering healthy and flavorful food options. All our products undergo rigorous testing in both competitive and non-competitive settings and are Low FODMAP certified. We continue to develop new products to expand choices for those following this diet.
